Bill C-218, the bill that is now officially known as the “Cannabis Act”, is a law that would legalize the recreational use of cannabis in Canada. The bill received royal assent from the Governor General on April 13, 2018, and once it receives the necessary time to take effect, Canadian adults will no longer have to hide their pot smoking from authorities.

The Senate passed Bill C-218 on Friday afternoon in the final vote before the summer break. The bill, introduced by Senator Claude Carignan, requires online casinos to have interactive gaming machines to be able to operate in the country, a move that has been opposed by many online casinos across the globe.

The Senate passed Bill C-218, the most significant piece of gaming legislation in decades, on September 18th. The bill will, if passed by the House of Commons, establish a framework for a national retail lottery and online gaming system, which will open the way for the first legal online gambling industry in the world.. The Canadian gambling industry had reason to celebrate this week as legislation to legalize single event sports betting moved closer to reality. The Canadian Gaming Association is pleased that the Senate has officially passed the bill on third and final reading.

Bill C-218 was introduced by Conservative MP Kevin Waugh of Saskatoon. Its introduction would allow Canadian sports and gambling fans to bet on the outcome of one sporting event. It is believed that this legislation will take the country’s gambling sector to a whole new level and allow it to compete with its southern neighbours.

Third reading adopted

According to Paul Burns, president and CEO of the Canadian Gaming Association, the passage of the bill is a great success and an important step for the country’s gambling industry. Mr Burns explained that the league has been campaigning for the introduction of betting on individual events for over 10 years. He said the resolution was passed because the legislature is now fully aware of the economic benefits to the county.

Following the passage of the bill, the Association in its statement thanked the many officials, individuals and organizations who participated in the process. The association would like to especially thank Mr. Waugh, the sponsor of the bill in the House of Commons, Senator David Wells, the sponsor of the bill in the Senate, and Brian Masse, the member for Windsor West.

In addition, the association notes the efforts to introduce individual sports betting by Gord Brown, MP for Leeds-Grenville Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. Sir, I’m sorry. Brown was a strong advocate for game change, but sadly passed away in 2018. A full list of stakeholders supporting Bill C-218 will be available at bettersportsbetting.ca.

Carrie Kormos, president of the CGA, said the introduction of single-sport betting in the country would dramatically improve sports betting in Canada. Mr. Kormos believes the legislation will be able to help the gambling industry, which has been hit by an unprecedented situation, with the country’s casinos closed for most of the past 15 months.

Urgent request

In early May, the Canadian Gaming Association recommended that the Senate fast-track Bill C-218. The association feared that as long as the country’s permanent casinos were closed, residents would have no choice but to turn to offshore sites to gamble, draining millions of dollars from the country. The union has even launched an online campaign in support of Bill C-218 called #bettersportsbetting.

Welcoming new members

Last February, the Canadian Gaming Association officially welcomed a new member, the Real Luck Group and its subsidiary Luckbox. The latter is known in the gambling industry as a leader in online sports betting offerings, and its CEO Quentin Martin said it was another important step for the company in its evolution leading up to the launch of individual sports betting.
