On Tuesday, the Connecticut State Legislature passed a bill to allow the state to offer online gambling. The governor signed it on Thursday. But what about the proposal before the Illinois General Assembly? It’s a bit late in the game to be making any sort of progress there, but Illinois is trying. The state Senate approved a bill to allow online gaming, and the House is set to vote on it as soon as this week.
In the past few months there has been a flurry of activity in providing online gaming in Illinois. The first of these was Bechtel National, who announced that they would be investing $500,000 into a novel gaming system that was being developed by the University of Illinois. The same company announced that the system would be operational within the first half of 2008, and the system would be used at the University of Illinois’ flagship campus in Champaign. The system would be a community based system, with which the system would allow the players to develop social interactions, and the games would be played on the platform.
In a massive victory for the Internet gambling industry, a package that legalized online gaming in Connecticut passed through the state’s legislature. The bill, which now heads to Governor Jodi Rell’s desk, was passed in a unanimous vote in the state’s House and Senate, and was passed by the state’s governor on Wednesday. Within a year of the bill’s initial proposed passage, the bill is expected to pass the state House again and reach Rell’s desk for a final approval.
Last week there was mixed news in the regulated online poker market in the US. The good news is that another state has legalized online poker. The bad news is that Illinois’ promising legislation didn’t make it to the ballot. Last week, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont (D) signed a bill legalizing online casinos, sports betting and poker. The Constitution State became the seventh state to legalize online poker, and the list now includes the following states: With the signing of this law, Connecticut is now ready to create a modern, technologically advanced gaming industry that can compete with neighboring states and ensure our success in the future, Governor Lamont said after the signing of the law. Overview of Connecticut’s online gaming laws
In Connecticut, the path to legalization was fairly quick. Lamont spoke in favor of the legislation earlier this year and the issue received bipartisan support. The state Legislature passed the bill in late May and the Senate backed it last week. Lamont signed the bill into law Friday. The Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes and the state lottery can offer online gambling and sports betting under the law. Although the legislation was passed quickly, this does not mean that gambling will necessarily start soon. The government and the tribes will seek permission from the Bureau of Indian Affairs of the U.S. Department of the Interior to amend the state-tribal agreement. This must happen before online gambling and sports betting can be offered in the state, according to NBC Connecticut. By law, the state’s general fund receives monthly payments from the tribes and the state lottery. This represents between 13.75% and 20% of gross revenues from sports betting, online casino games and fantasy games. The state also receives $500,000 a year from each tribe and $1 million from the lottery to fund problem gambling programs.
What is the future of online poker in Connecticut?
A quick start with online poker seems unlikely. Connecticut has only 3.6 million residents, making it a small state. It surpasses Delaware (974,000), West Virginia (1.8 million) and Nevada (3.1 million). It is still far behind New Jersey (8.9 million), Michigan (10 million) and Pennsylvania (12.8 million). In the states of Delaware and Nevada, there is only one online poker operator. The platform is not yet operational in WV. WSOP.com operates in Nevada and 888poker is the only platform in Delaware. 888 is a software partner of the World Series of Poker and is working on expanding into Pennsylvania and Michigan. 888/WSOP.com operates the country’s only interstate online poker deal, the All-American Poker Network. The network connects jackpot players between New Jersey, Nevada and to 888 in Delaware. Universal liquidity would be a better solution for small states like Connecticut and West Virginia. That’s not to say the Connecticut platform doesn’t take risks. But the state will certainly not be a priority until interstate agreements are put into effect. Poker fans have seen some news on this front, at least recently, but that doesn’t mean a settlement is imminent. I look forward to signing a multi-state poker agreement, Henry Williams, the new executive director of the Michigan Gaming Control Board, told Online Poker Report. The agency is negotiating with other states and hopes to announce an agreement later this year. FREE GOLD COIN PACKAGE WORTH $20. With a verified account. Illinois legislative session ends without a vote
In recent months, Illinois has become hopeful again for the industry. The Internet gambling bill received broad support, but the legislative session ended Tuesday morning without passage. The state of Illinois, with a population of 12.7 million, is a promising market – either as a standalone poker market or as part of a shared liquidity scheme. If passed, the bill will include provisions to expedite the licensing of certain operators. This could mean the launch of online poker later this year. Now gamblers in the state must hope that lawmakers will revisit the issue in the fall. iGaming has received the support of state officials, but other issues have taken precedence. The legislature is considering making changes to the state’s sports betting laws in the fall, OPR reports. This gives hope that online games will also be included in the mix. Otherwise, players will have to wait until 2022.If you are interested in playing online casino games, you can often find yourself bored by the lack of choice in the state you live in. Thankfully, things are changing, and the number of places where you can play games online is quickly increasing. It’s not just casinos that are moving online, either. More than 100 states have legalised online gambling, and many other states are considering this move. The main difference between these states and the ones that have passed online gambling is that they have limited the location of the casinos to where they can be regulated. The United States is now the second most popular country in the world for online gambling, behind only the United Kingdom..
