The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) has made the second payments to Sault Ste. Marie by cheque, despite not having a contract with the city.

The Ontario Lottery and Casino Corporation has begun to compensate municipalities in Ontario for hosting gaming facilities in their jurisdictions. The Crown agency just finished paying Sault Ste. Marie non-tax gaming income for hosting Gateway Casinos Sault Ste. Marie. The payout amount for the second quarter of 2021 is CA$325,000.


The Crown corporation and the towns of Ontario have received more than CA$1.76 billion in non-tax gaming income as a result of the deal thus far. The city of Sault Ste. Marie has earned about CA$32 million from the agreement since 1999, which has been utilized to support the local economy in a variety of ways.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission (OLG) has officially awarded the City of Sault Ste. Marie their second-quarter non-tax gaming income payment for the hosting of Gateway Casinos – Sault Ste. Marie on October 21, 2021. From July 1, 2021, to September 30, 2021, the quarter will be completed. The amount is calculated by a formula-based graded scale of gaming income at the site, which the Crown pays municipalities under Municipality Contribution Agreements.

Ross Romano, MPP for Sault Ste. Marie, said that he is happy with the province’s safe reopening plan, and that the City of Sault Ste. Marie may once again profit from the operating casinos. According to Mr. Romano, the financial profits from casinos are utilized to fund important community programs via the Municipality Contribution Agreement.

Casinos in Ontario were permitted to reopen doors on July 16, 2021, in line with the government reopening plan. After that, each service provider set their own reopening date for their premises in collaboration with the OLG, depending on their ability and preparedness to resume operations under the new health and safety standards.

Then, by August 16, 2021, all gambling establishments in Ontario had managed to reopen and welcome customers back. With the reopening of gaming facilities in the province, Crown service providers and operators will be free to relaunch their growth plans and contribute to the long-term viability of casino offers in the province.

Workplace Relocation

Mr. Romano has stated his wish to see more OLG employment returned to the Crown agency’s headquarters in Sault Ste. Marie. Currently, 800 OLG jobs are located at the Crown’s office in Toronto, since the majority of employees from Sault Ste. Marie have been moved there over time. Mr. Romano claims that the jobs are vital to the people of Sault Ste. Marie and that he wants to see a change in the trend.

The Federal Audit is Now Available

The findings of the federal government of Canada’s audit of the OLG’s performance from last year were just released. According to a study done by a federal government internal division, Crown agency executives have been engaged in a number of irregularities, including the abuse of corporate credit cards, overcompensation of employee increases in compared to other state-run institutions, and other infractions.
